Wildfire warning puts stop to torchlight tradition
A STAPLE part of Moffat’s gala day celebrations will not go ahead on Saturday due to wildfire safety reasons.
The torchlight procession from the Town Hall and subsequent bonfire at Hope Johnstone Park has been part of the gala celebrations for generations.
But a very high wildfire warning has been issued for the region and it is set to last until Monday July 20, leading the gala committee to call off this year’s procession and bonfire.
A gala spokesperson said: “With the current spell of dry weather concerns have been raised about the bonfire this year.
“Advice was sought from the fire service and the Gala committee began putting extra safeguards in place.
“However we were unsure whether it was wise to proceed and this has been the source of much discussion over the last few days.
“We appreciate that the procession and bonfire are a major part of the day, more so this year as Gala celebrates its 75th anniversary.
“The desire to uphold years of tradition is extremely strong, but we find ourselves having to listen to our heads rather than our hearts.
“The safety of our community and the surrounding area must come first.
“We feel it would be foolhardy to go ahead with the torchlight procession and bonfire this year.
“We hope you understand this was a difficult decision to make and know that we share in your disappointment.”
Scottish Fire and Rescue’s Wildfire Tactical Advisor, Kevin Dingwall, added: “We know many people will want to enjoy the warmer weather. If you’re spending time outdoors, please do so responsibly and take simple steps to prevent fires from starting.
“Hot, dry conditions increase the risk of wildfire across Scotland. Even if a warning is not in place where you live, we ask everyone to stay vigilant.
“Wildfires can destroy property, landscapes and wildlife. That’s why it’s so important that everyone takes extra care during these conditions.
“Avoid lighting outdoor fires or barbecues in affected areas, and remember that a single spark can cause significant damage. There is no such thing as a harmless fire.”
