Stage is set for Moffat gala

THE MOFFAT and District Gala team are preparing for their 75th event as hundreds of visitors are invited to the high street this Saturday for the crowning of the Gala Queen.

Bowling competitions, darts and energetic activities attracted participants of all ages this week.

Saturday’s climax is expected to bring families and visitors to the region together for a day of continued fun.

Kicking off proceedings, a children’s fancy dress competition will take place from 10.30 am at Station Park with categories for children aged 0-5 and 6-12 years competing for the Shepherd and Lass Cup for best overall cos- tume, and the Granny Bell Special Individual Trophy.

Decorated vehicles will also be on dis- play, with £75 up for grabs for the decorated vehicle category. The competition is sponsored by Ruairidh, Finlay & Elsie Watson, Ricky Bell Roofing and Building Maintenance.

Isla Wolstenholme is this year’s Gala Queen, who will be accompanied by Gala Princess Paige Sibling.

The crowning of the Queen of Upper Annandale will begin at 2.30 pm.

Entertainment will follow at Park Circle Playing Field throughout the afternoon.

The procession will then leave from the Town Hall at 10.00 pm, led by Gala principals.

After over 40 years of dedication in the role, former Moffat and District Gala Chairperson, Idy Davidson, has handed the reins to Sarah Watkins this year.

On the appointment, Watkins says it has been an “honour” preparing for this year’s event, and hopes the bright, warm days continue for everyone in attendance.

Moffat’s motto is ‘NUNNQUAM NON PARATUS’, meaning ‘never not prepared’.

The sentiment has been reflected in the efforts of the gala team as residents and visitors prepare to descend on the town this Saturday for the annual celebrations.
