Praise for old school progress

POLITICIANS have visited The Old School Project in Lockerbie ahead of the formal opening of its new community hub.

Craig Hoy MSP, David Mundell MP and Annandale North Councillor Lynne Davis dropped in to see what has been created in the Dryfe Road site.

The Old School Project was established by local residents with the aim of securing the future of the historic 148-year-old school building.

It has now been transformed into a vibrant community asset, ready to open later this year as a space that will support community groups, learning, wellbeing, enterprise, arts and cultural activities.

During the visit, Mr Hoy and Mr Mundell met trustees and volunteers to hear about their efforts to save the former school and the work done to transform it into a sustainable community hub that will serve Lockerbie for generations to come.

Praising them, Craig Hoy said: “It was a real pleasure to visit The Old School Project and see first-hand the remarkable transformation that has taken place.

“This is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision and determination. The dedication of the trustees, volunteers and partners involved has ensured that this historic building will continue to play an important role at the heart of Lockerbie for many years to come.

“I wish everyone involved every success with the formal opening and the exciting future that lies ahead.”

David Mundell MP, himself a former pupil of Dryfesdale Public School, added: “The Old School Project is an outstanding example of community-led regeneration. Rather than seeing this historic building lost, local people have rolled up their sleeves to create a facility that will provide lasting benefits for the whole community.

“I congratulate everyone involved and look forward to seeing the hub become a thriving focal point for Lockerbie.”
