A POPULAR cafe which sits bang slap on the English border closed this week.

The doors were shut on the Old Toll Bar Cafe at Gretna on Tuesday.

Explaining more, Oliver Rolfe, chief operating officer at owners Gretna Green Ltd, said: “After careful consideration, we have taken the difficult decision to close the Old Toll Bar Café.

“The Old Toll Bar has been part of the Gretna Green story for many years, and we know the café has been valued by customers, colleagues and the local community.

“Following a thorough review, we concluded that the café is no longer commercially sustainable in its current form.”

However, he stressed the closure relates to the café operation and not the long-term potential of the site itself, adding: “The Old Toll Bar remains an important part of Gretna Green, and the building will continue to be maintained while we consider its long-term future.

“Importantly, every member of the Old Toll Bar team will remain with Gretna Green, moving into roles elsewhere across the organisation.

“We would like to thank everyone who has supported the Old Toll Bar over the years, and to acknowledge the dedication of those who have worked there and the loyalty of our customers.”
