Vintage passion turns bridal business

A LOCHMABEN girl has turned her love of vintage into her dream job.

FIRST DANCE . . . by Chantal Lachance-Gibson Photography

Wendy Harman started her own vintage dress design company – Flossy and Dossy – in 2009.
Originally from Lochmaben, Wendy now operates her successful business from the heart of Glasgow and helps create dozens of brides’ dresses ever year.
She said: “When I first started it was just a hobby. I love sewing and started making things for me and my friends.
“I started my business in 2009 mainly focusing on 50s-style cotton dresses but I started to focus only on weddings in 2012.”
Discussing her deep rooted love of vintage, she said: “I’ve always loves old things, from old music growing up, thanks to my dad, to vintage clothes from watching old films. I get most of my inspiration from the 1930s to 1950s.
“I get asked a lot where the name Flossy and Dossy comes from – it was made up by my lovely husband. I didn’t want a boring business name and I think it fits that bill and suits my style.”

LOVELY . . . by Struve Photography

Wendy makes up to 30 wedding dresses a year and her customers travel from as London to be fitted with one of her unique designs.
Describing the process, she said: “It takes about five to six month from the first consultation to pick up.
“I like to work with the bride to get the best design possible for her. I then do a calcio mock up and two or three fittings after that.
“It’s a nice relaxed process which most of my customers enjoy as much as the finished dress.”
Her advice to brides when it comes to buying the all important dress is to do as much research as possible.
She said: “Brides should do a lot of Internet research into styles they like.
“Pintrest is great for this. Also, they should try on a lot of different styles so they can see what suits them.”
