Schools to close again for strikes

TWO days of teacher strikes this week will see all schools in the region closed again.

The industrial action, which relates to pay, will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Education Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville has written to all councils, including Dumfries and Galloway, asking them to consider how secondary schools can remain open for pupils preparing for exams.

She said this is being reviewed by councils on a school by school basis.

However, when asked about the local situation, a Dumfries and Galloway Council spokesperson yesterday said: “At this time, our focus is to support schools as they lead learning and teaching for senior phase pupils. COSLA will continue to represent councils within negotiations with the teacher trade unions.”

Meanwhile, South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth has once again called on the Scottish Government to get back round the negotiating table with the unions.

He said: “Teachers in our region don’t want to go out on strike but they feel they have no choice.

“The cost of living crisis, following on from the years of misery during the pandemic, have brought many of our public services to their knees.
