‘Our loved ones deserve better!’

A PETITION demanding urgent action to repair a “neglected” Annandale cemetery has gained over 220 signatures in just days.
Local resident Sean Black launched the campaign after becoming increasingly alarmed by the deteriorating state of Hoddom Graveyard in Ecclefechan.
He first sent a formal letter of complaint to council officials and has now started the fast-growing petition.
Dumfries and Galloway Council has responded to the backlash, stating they will review the specific maintenance issues raised by the community.
Speaking out about the campaign, Mr Black emphasised that the cemetery is a vital part of the area’s heritage.
He said: “Our cemetery is far more than a burial ground.
“It is a place of remembrance where our loved ones rest, where families come to reflect, and where generations of our community’s history are preserved.
“However, the current state of Hoddom Graveyard does not reflect the respect and reverence it deserves.
“Over the past few years, the maintenance of this sacred site has greatly declined.
“This neglect not only tarnishes the solemnity of the graveyard but also disrespects the memory of those buried there.”
The petition specifically targets the Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Grounds Maintenance department, calling on them to prioritise regular and thorough upkeep.
Residents are demanding a clear action plan to restore the graveyard, including driveway repairs, neater landscaping, safety upgrades and cosmetic fixes.
The campaign began after Mr Black posted his concerns on the Ecclefechan Community Facebook page, triggering an immediate wave of shared anger and support from fellow residents.
“The response has shown just how many people care about this special place and the loved ones who rest there,” Mr Black added, urging more people to sign and share the online link. “Our loved ones deserve better. They deserve a peaceful, well-maintained resting place, and our community deserves a graveyard that reflects the respect they should be shown.”
A spokesperson for Dumfries and Galloway Council confirmed they are aware of the complaints, stating: “We will review any issues raised to us regarding the maintenance of the cemetery.”
