Lochmaben gets in shape with outdoor gym plan

IT COULD be time to get ‘physical’ in Lochmaben soon as efforts have begun to get the town an outdoor gym.

The Lochmaben Initiative are hoping to create a free outdoor gym for locals young and old to use.

Chairman Howard Baisden explained that the idea was first raised several months ago and since has grown in popularity, with nearly 100 people signingapetition of support.

Mr Baisden said: “Many members of the Initiative have seen outdoor gyms thriving in other areas and we thought that’s what Lochmaben needs.

“We, everyone, are always being told to be fitter and live healthier lives so creating a gym that is free at point of use for all could only beapositive thing for the town.”

Locations such as Victory Park, Kirk Loch and Grummel Park have all been mooted as possible gym venues.

Mr Baisden said: “What all these locations have in common is that they are near swings, perfect for parents who want to work out yet still have their children in eyeshot.”

Discussing the dream, he added: “Ideally the dream would be to make good use of the current fitness buzz in Lochmaben.

Thanks to the developments at Castle Loch we have seenabig increase in young people running around the loch and families walking it.

“It would be amazing if we could dot machines at various locations around the town and make it into a fitness track, that would be the eventual aim if the idea is popular enough.”

So far quotations for different styles of machines and equipment have been obtained but the Initiative are keen to get the backing of the wider town.

They hope to hostapublic meeting soon and start a steering group to help make the fitness vision a reality for Lochmaben.
