Barony Family Day back with a bang

LIVE milking demonstrations, a dog agility display and tractor and trailer rides are among the activities on offer at the Barony Family Day on Sunday afternoon.

Organised by Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) at its Barony campus near Dumfries, the event promises to be entertaining as well as educational, with youngsters and families getting the chance to take a tour round the animal care facilities and watch tree-climbing demonstrations by the forestry team.

They can also learn more about the Digital Dairy Chain.

As well as getting hands-on with SRUC’s modern teaching techniques, visitors can enjoy a look into agriculture’s past, with displays of vintage tractors as well as rare breeds of sheep and goats.

There will be plenty of food and drink on offer, including milkshakes from Roan’s Dairy, while Arla will be putting on a live milking display at the Barony Dairy Unit. Professor Nick Sparks, Dean of SRUC’s South and West Faculty, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to announce the return of Barony Family Day. It’s a brilliant opportunity for people to explore the campus and see some of the fantastic things we have to offer prospective students. It’s a stunning setting with stacks to do for all the family and we can’t wait to see everyone here.”

It runs from 1-4.30 pm and entry is free but parking is £5 per car.
