POWFOOT Golf Club is looking to expand their ladies section, with a shout out to women interested in the game. They are aiming to encourage and improve the uptake of golf for everyone, in particular the currently low numbers of ladies who play. Getting Ladies into Golf is an initiative from Scottish Golf which has been taken up by the popular club. Helping raise awareness is Anne Tebbutt, who has played the sport for over 60 years and has no plans to stop anytime soon. She loves playing, getting outdoors and taking part in the social side. The 87-year-old started her golf journey when she moved abroad. Upon returning to this country she joined Carlisle Golf Club, where she was a member for 40 years, before moving to Powfoot – she has been part of the ladies section there for the last 12 years. Anne was originally encouraged to play by her husband, she said: “I took some lessons and started to play. “I love being outdoors, I have always been quite sporty. I found I could hit the ball quite a long way to begin with.” Anne, who is a regular on the course most weeks, would encourage anyone of any age to come along and have a go. She added: “I can still play and I still enjoy it. “I can assure anyone that it’s very welcoming and the ladies section is very, very good. They are very welcoming to new members. We also have lots of competitions, everybody is included and we have lots of social events. “The course itself is super. It’s a great course with beautiful views, and it doesn’t have any hills, which is great when you’re getting a bit older! “Why would you not want to join? It’s just a great place.” Vice captain Ann Robison said: “Golf is a sport that anyone can play, and is truly for all ages, from youngsters up to octogenarians! “The benefits are many and include improved physical, mental, psychological and social health. “We provide the space to exercise gently and socialise with others, outdoors in the fresh sea air, with beautiful scenery to appreciate, and indoors in the clubhouse over coffee.” This current initiative is for ladies aged 18 and over who have never tried golf before. The club are offering six golf lessons from a PGA coach, followed by three months membership for £99. Equipment will be provided for the weekly lessons, which start on Saturday May 9, from 11 am to 12 pm.
