Tait’s header seals Jambos draw
GRETNA FC 2008 shared the spoils against Hearts B under the lights last Friday night in Edinburgh. The Black and Whites increased their unbeaten run following a 1-1 draw with the Young Jambos at Ainslie Park. Callen Robb opened up the scoring for the hosts from the penalty spot on 55 minutes. The Anvils then responded 15 minutes later when Hayden Tait headed home a cross to net his first goal for the club. Hearts had a huge opportunity to win it in the final minute when Taylor Hogarth struck from close range but Jim Atkinson saved superbly for the away side. Assistant manager Kevin Somerville said: “First and foremost, we are delighted to stretch our unbeaten run in the Lowland League to five games. “It’s a real credit to the players that we’ve managed to accumulate 11 points from the last 15 available. “We’ve said before how tough this league is. It has been getting tougher every season, so the lads should be proud of the run they have strung together.” He added: “As far as the game goes, we felt that we had the better opportunities in the first half and defended well as a unit. “To go behind to the penalty in the second half was a real blow, but the lads showed great ability to bounce back to get level. “I’m delighted for Hayden Tait to get the goal from a wicked Kyan Gunn cross. “Taity epitomises everything we want at this club. He’s a hard-working, talented and respectful young man. He was then unlucky not to win it with an effort off the bar. “As much as we felt we could have won it, we also need to give credit to Jim Atkinson who made a save near the end that very few goalkeepers would be capable of making. “Overall we can’t fault the effort and attitude of all the lads. The performance gives us hope that we can continue to amass more points in our remaining seven games and climb the table.” Tomorrow afternoon the team travel to play Linlithgow Rose. Elsewhere, also on Friday night, Gretna U20’s beat Threave Rovers 1-0 at Raydale Park. Harry Aitchison scored the only goal of the game for the home side. Gretna now hold an 11 point lead in the WOSFDL Conference A League table, with two games remaining. Second placed Thorniewood United have four games left, so could theoretically still catch Gretna.
