Quigg’s winner topples Spartans
STRANRAER took a big step towards their League Two play-off goal after they beat title chasing Spartans 2-1 at Stair Park last Saturday.
Dean Clelland headed home the opener for the hosts on 12 minutes.
It was not until midway through the second half when Ethan Drysdale equalised for the visitors, who had grown into the game.
However, Stranraer were not disheartened, and incredible scenes erupted in extra time when Aaron Quigg’s lob hit the back of the net to seal three points.
Blues boss Chris Aitken said: “I’m delighted to get three points.
“I thought we were really good in the first 20 minutes, and I thought we deserved to go in 1-0 up at halftime.
“I said at halftime we needed to weather the storm – when a team sits at the top, for as long as they have been, it tells you they are a really good team.
“Did we ride our luck in the second half? Absolutely.
“But at the end of the day it’s about my guys. They’ve came to the fore and been absolutely sensational for the last two thirds of the season.
“They keep on going and they don’t give up.”
He added: “To get three points and win 2-1, I’m absolutely over the moon.
“We’ve got 12 games to go now, six at home and six away. If we want to try and stay in the top four we need to make sure we can grind out results like today.”
Next up for the Blues is another home game on Saturday against Elgin City.
