Nick Weston and his Border City Centurions flag football team were crowned champions of Division One North A on Saturday at the National Speedway Stadium in Manchester, after seeing off a triple threat of Teesside, Sheffield and Manchester.

The outfit, which features a strong contingent of players from South West Scotland, secured the top spot in empathic fashion. They also extended their winning record to 16 wins and zero losses for the season.

Flag Football is a rapidly growing, high-skill, non-contact format of American Football with over two million playing the sport world-wide.

The Border City Centurions are a Carlisle based Flag American Football Team, with club members and players from across Cumbria, South Scotland and Borderland.

Their results last weekend were a reflection of the dominance they have imposed on Division One this year, beating Teesside 56-0, Sheffield 61-6 and finally rounding it off with a thrashing of the home side Manchester 41-19.

They are now unreachable at the top of the table as Warrington, West Lancashire and Manchester are left to battle it out for second place.

Clinching the title ‘Kings of the North’ also makes the side heavy favourites in the seeded draw for the National Finals in September as well as a chance for automatic promotion to the Premiership.

This is the first major title for the Borderland region in over 35 years of attempts.

The achievement cannot be overstated as the team are only three seasons old.

However, they now have a ruthless reputation for relentless attacking football with a staunch, rock-solid, record on defence to match.

There is still one more game day to compete before UK Finals seeding is set in stone. This will see the Cents travel to Salford in a few weeks to face three further opponents. But no one is now betting against the boys from the Border finishing the season undefeated on a perfect 19-0-0 record.
