Hub plan revealed for former depot

A PROPOSAL to turn the Old Church Depot into a creative hub was showcased this week by Space to Grow Moffat.

The community organisation held a public consultation at the town hall on Tuesday afternoon to get feedback from residents about their latest plans for the site at Annanside.

Their vision for the former depot include a complete overhaul both inside and outside, with two large workshop spaces and a meeting room created on the ground floor and six smaller units on the upper level which could be used as studio space or remote working. There would also be additional units and green spaces behind the building.

Space to Grow Moffat began developing ideas for the old depot back in 2018 and had their first round of consultations in 2021 via Teams and telephone.

Now they are looking to move forward and apply for planning permission soon, as well as start the search for funding.

Explaining more, chairperson of Space to Grow Moffat Jon Haydon said: “We’re looking at making the space as flexible as we can, our grand vision is to attract all kinds of different people to the space from potters and other creatives to our already existing allotment holders.

“This will be a great asset to the community and based on the consultation we’ve had so far it’s been very positive, but it is an on-going process.

“We hope to put in for planning permission later this year, then we’ll be looking into funding from the Scottish Government, we would submit our application to that in 2024. And assuming everything goes smoothly, we would begin building in 2025.”
