Hero Tony in house fire rescue

AN Annan man didn’t think twice about helping when he spotted a house on fire.

Tony Nisbet, above, took action and rescued two vulnerable adults from the blazing property in Queensberry Street last week.

Describing what happened, he said the smoke coming out of the house was ‘thick and acrid’.

Mr Nisbet had been in the area when he noticed blacked out windows at the property.

Being familiar with the layout of the house from his work at Newstart Recycling, he navigated through the smokefilled building in search of the owners and the source of the fire.

“The heat was immense,” he said.

He then went on to discard pans which had been left on the cooker, and brought the two individuals to safety, ahead of the emergency services’ arrival.

Modest about his actions, he added: “The people are known to me. I’ve worked in a lot of these houses, and know the layout of them. There are vulnerable people living in this area.

“It’s just about being kind.”

Meanwhile, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirm that they responded to a call at 2.27 pm last Monday, mobilising three appliances to the scene where two casualties had been reported.

A spokesperson from Police Scotland said: “Officers assisted the fire service and no criminality was established.”

Mr Nisbet has since visited the two individuals involved, who said they were very grateful to him.
