Grim covid death toll

A TOTAL of 43 people have died from covid in Dumfries and Galloway so far this year.

That compares to 79 overall last year and brings the region’s coronavirus death toll up to 122.

The first deaths were recorded at the end of March 2020, there was a break over the summer with just one person dying at the end of August, but then numbers started to rise again from last September.

The more recent information from National Records of Scotland show a rise in deaths as January has progressed, with four registered in the first week of this month, then 20, and 19 last week.

And, covid has accounted for 23.2 per cent of all deaths locally so far this month.

However, there is some hope on the horizon.

Daily figures published yesterday by Public Health Scotland indicate that a peak in hospitalisations may be starting to pass.

As of yesterday, there were 56 people receiving treatment for covid in Dumfries and Galloway and 10 in intensive care units.

This is a slight drop on last week’s numbers.

The region’s case positivity rate has also gone down to just over five per cent from 9.2 per cent.

And while there were 283 new positive cases in the last week, it does represent a continual decrease as lockdown continues.

Commenting, NHS Dumfries and Galloway interim director of public health Valerie White said: “This is good progress, and doubtlessly due to everyone’s efforts and sacrifices, but we still have some way to go in bringing down the number of cases.

“We need to keep momentum going in this direction, and I’d urge everyone to follow the rules around staying at home except for essential reasons and when out wearing face coverings, maintaining good hand hygiene and physically distancing.”
