Gretna youngsters triumph in Barcelona Cup
A YEAR of planning, passion, and persistence paid off as Gretna FC 2010s travelled to Spain to compete in the prestigious Barcelona Cup. The decision to take the team abroad was made a year prior, and with enthusiastic support from parents and coaches, the squad set off determined to make their mark. Placed in Group D, Gretna faced a trio of formidable Scandinavian sides – teams known for their size, strength, and technical prowess. But the young lads from Gretna were not intimidated. With one win, one draw, and one loss, they secured second place in the group, earning a spot in the B Finals bracket. The semi-final was a roller-coaster. Gretna surged ahead with a 2-0 lead, only for the opposition to rally after an impromptu team talk mid-pitch. The match ended 2-2, sending it to penalties – a scenario Gretna had prepared for diligently in training. Keeper Taylor stepped up heroically, saving two spot-kicks. Lewis, Thomas, and Robbie converted theirs with confidence, sealing a 3-0 shoot-out victory and booking a place in the final. The final began with early adversity as Gretna fell behind 1-0 within five minutes. But belief never wavered. Lewis equalised, igniting the travelling support – the self-proclaimed ‘Barmy Army’ –into full voice. With 15 minutes to go, tension mounted. Then came the breakthrough. Relentless pressing led to a turnover deep in the opponent’s box, and Lewis struck again, firing home the winner. The crowd erupted. In the dying moments, a reckless challenge on Lewis saw the opposing keeper sent off, but Gretna held firm until the final whistle. The celebrations were euphoric as coaches, parents, and players alike basked in the pride of lifting silverware on foreign soil. Plans are already stirring for next year’s campaign.
