Goss bids farewell
ANNAN Athletic’s season finale may have ended in a draw but the post-match headlines were dominated by the departure of a promotion hero.
Wullie Gibson confirmed that star striker Tommy Goss will leave Galabank this summer, whilst confirming his own playing career is far from over.
The departure of Goss marks the end of a prolific chapter for Annan. The striker – who played a vital part in the club’s historic promotion to League One – has agreed to move on in search of a “fresh start”.
Gibson revealed that the decision followed an honest “heart-to-heart” conversation between the two.
He said: “Tommy recognised he needs something fresh. The decision was down to both of us.
“There’s no ill feeling whatsoever. It’s just a decision made by both parties. I want to look back on what Tommy has done for Annan, he has been excellent.
“Hopefully, the fans will remember the part he played in the promotion season.”
Goss didn’t get the chance to say goodbye on the pitch during Annan’s 1-1 draw with Forfar as a precaution due to a tight hamstring.
Gibson noted it wouldn’t have been fair to risk the striker’s fitness as he prepares to find a new club for the next campaign.
But Goss announced his exit from Annan on social media.
He said: “After five seasons at the club, it’s time to move on. I shared a changing room with some top people and made some friends for life.
“The fans have showed me love ever since I joined and I thank you all for that.
“I wish the club all the best going forward.
“I’m excited for what’s next.”
But Gibson – who turns 42 this summer – made it clear he has no intention of retiring from the pitch just yet.
Despite the heavy lifting of management, Gibson’s influence on the field remains undeniable. The Galabankies have secured only one victory in the 12 games Gibson has missed this season.
Gibson joked: “I’ve not got a playing contract yet; I better speak to the manager!
“I’ll be 42 in the summer and I’ve still got the willingness to stay fit. I’ve always said I’ll let my legs make the decision and not my head, and I’m as fit as ever.”
Gibson – who earned a player of the season nomination voted by players across League Two – hopes his dedication to fitness serves as a challenge to his younger teammates.
He added: “If I can do that at my age, then hopefully that can inspire the younger players to get fitter. I take pride in being nominated. It’s a big honour to be recognised by the players we go up against every week.”
Following the conclusion of the season, the club also confirmed that Joel Mumbongo, Paul McGowan and Gio Clarke will be leaving.
But now the manager is looking to the future and is already planning a promotion charge.
While admitting he has “tough decisions” to make regarding the rest of the squad, Gibson’s personal commitment to the cause remains the foundation for next season.
He said: “One way or the other, I want promotion next season.
“The work is always going on in the background to add the quality we need.”
