Five points in Greenock
ANNAN 1st XV claimed a 36-10 victory away to Greenock Wanderers last Saturday in their penultimate West Division One fixture.
Going into the match, both teams were fairly even in league positions and points, so a close encounter was expected.
And it was nip and tuck for the first 20 minutes, but the deadlock was broken as Annan took the lead, thanks to JJ MacKay crashing over for his first try for the 1st XV on his seventh appearance.
It got better when, in the 35th minute, Rohan Cother popped up for his fifth try of the season, Fraser McMillan converted.
And just before half time it was 0-19 as captain Ryan Glass stormed over the whitewash, McMillan with the conversion.
Last time out, the backs scored all the Annan tries. The forwards were making sure that this half it was going to be them.
Greenock hit back in the second half with an early try to take it to 5-19.
But Annan hit back, and it was another forward, and another first as Sean Armstrong barged over to score his debut try on his 22nd appearance. McMillan’s successful conversion made it 5-26 to Annan.
Greenock scored next but the Annan backs finally got on to the score-sheet as Scott Norman sprinted over to take it to 10-31.
And MacKay scored another another try at the death to make the final score: Greenock Wanderers 10 Annan 36
The 1st XV’s next and last league match of the season is not until May 2 when they travel to promotion-chasing Lenzie.
It may well be the match Lenzie need to win to go up.
