Displays in Honour of Robert Burns
Two new displays are set top open at the Robert Burns Centre in Dumfries for the very first time, to honour the anniversary of the poets death.
A photographic exhibition titled ‘Farewell: The Last Journey of Robert Burns’ has been created by local photographer, Gerry Robertson, with support of the Ottersburn Gallery.
The second display showcases scale models of The Midsteeple, Robert Burns House, and Burns’ Mausoleum, which have been created by Colin Hunter McQueen.
The models show locations of significance and connection with the late Scottish bard, with his final home, the building that his funeral began in, and the Mausoleum where the poet and his family ultimately interred being presented.
The exhibitions will be shown as part of wider commemoration events taking place across Dumfries and Galloway, which are paying tribute to the 230th anniversary of the death of Robert Burns, who died on the July 21,1796.
Chairman of the Education Skills and Community Wellbeing Committee Councillor Tracey Little said: “Robert Burns’ memory is alive and well in the town he called home, and these are great new creative ways to explore his life and legacy.”
Councillor Little added that the new approach should help visitors and locals see the town and history in a new way.
Vice Chair of the Education, Skills and Community Wellbeing Committee, Councillor George Jamieson, said: “The three buildings depicted as models are some of the architectural and heritage jewels of Dumfries.”
The exhibitions will run from July until January and are free to visit.
The Robert Burns Centre is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm and Sunday from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm.
