A PRESENTATION of an engraved shell case that was fired as a salute to the late Queen Elizabeth has been gifted to Dumfries and Maxwelltown Royal British Legion Scotland.

The case was presented as a souvenir to Stephanie Broatch, a serving soldier and Legion Scotland member, who was a member of the firing party on the day of the funeral.

Staff Sergeant Broatch wished to pass the case to her local branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland.

This shell case was one of 96 fired as a salute at the funeral of Her Majesty the late Queen Elizabeth on September 8 2022.

The engraved 105mm shell case was handed over during a presentation at the Queen of the South Arena on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, a local man, William Boyd, received a surprise presentation from the Lord Lieutenant of Dumfries, Dr Fiona Armstrong last Saturday.

This was in recognition of William completing 60 years unbroken military uniform service from boy service, regular army service, Territorial Army service to finally becoming an adult instructor for many years with the local Army Cadet Force.
Now approaching 76 years of age and still actively engaged with army cadets it was decided that this milestone should be recognised.

Branch chairman Richard Reade MBE said: “It should also be noted that as well as all his other roles he has been an enthusiastic member of the local branch of Royal British Legion Scotland for many years.

“This unassuming man is and continues to be an inspiration throughout the military spectrum, to young cadets and the not so young veterans of Legion Scotland, always helping, always available to assist where and when necessary without complaint.

“Of course behind every good man there is a better, long suffering woman.

“Quietly supporting William in the wings, all these years has been his wife, Jacqui.

“The couple will be celebrating their golden wedding this year.

“I feel that William’s story of quiet dedication and service to country and local community deserves to be shared with a wider audience.”

Both William and Jacqui received special certificates of merit to honour the occasion from Royal British Legion Scotland and the Lord Lieutenant of Dumfries, Dr Fiona Armstrong, along with other gifts from friends and well wishers.
