THE trial of a man accused of killing a Dumfries woman in Crete has been postponed at the last minute, causing devastation to her family.

The court case linked to the death of Jean Hanlon 17 years ago was due to start today.

However, her son Michael Porter on Tuesday shared the unexpected news that the accused, a Cretan man, had successfully applied for an adjournment.

Speaking from the island, Michael said he was devastated at the move, adding: “After everything we have endured and after travelling here with hope that we would finally see justice for our mum, this news has been devastating.

“To have this happen so late in the process feels incredibly cruel and deeply unfair. Once again, it feels as though the rights and needs of the accused have taken priority over those of the victim and the family left behind. I cannot express how sorry and disappointed I am.

“Once again, we feel let down by the system, and it feels like another painful lack of respect for our mum and for everything we have fought for.”

Michael and his brothers do not know when the trial will now take place but plan to go to court tomorrow, with the family’s lawyer, to try and find out more.

Added Michael: “I want to be clear that we do not accept this decision, but unfortunately it is outside of our control.

“Thank you to every single person who has continued to stand with us, support Mum, and keep her memory alive.”
