NEWTON Stewart moved within three points of third place after beating Abbey Vale 4-2 in a South of Scotland League encounter last Friday night in Dumfries. The visitors created a multitude of chances in a dominant first half. A penalty converted by Aaron Drysdale in the 20th minute and a Zak Service goal on the stroke of halftime were the difference between the sides going into the interval. The home side soon were back in the match after halftime when Rio Little capitalised on a defensive error to reduce the deficit. Newton restored their two goal advantage midway through the half when Zak Service smashed home his second and Newton’s third on the night. With just over quarter of an hour to go, Vale struck again after indecision in the Newton defence allowed substitute Reece Nicoll to bring it back to 3-2. However, The Creesiders finally secured the points with five minutes to go with the pick of the goals after a quick break down the right by Callum McKeand saw the full back finding Craig McCulloch on the far side and the winger played a first time pass towards the advancing Aaron Drysdale, who nonchalantly swept his curling strike high into the net. This Saturday Newton entertain Creetown, Wigtown visit Nithsdale, and Stranraer host Abbey Vale.
