Councillor's corner
by Dee and Glenkens Cllr John Denerley
HAVING lived and worked in this area for many years, I am passionate about supporting our rural communities and ensuring that local people have a strong voice in the decisions that affect their lives. Dee and Glenkens is a beautiful and diverse ward, stretching from our historic towns and villages to the stunning countryside that makes this part of Dumfries and Galloway such a special place to live, work and visit.
One of the key issues currently facing our area is the future of Kirkcudbright Bridge. The bridge is a vital link for residents, businesses and visitors, and its long-term future is of great importance to the local community. Over recent months, I have attended community engagement events and listened carefully to the views of residents and businesses. Any future solution must meet the community's needs while protecting Kirkcudbright's unique character and supporting the local economy.
Another issue that continues to generate significant public interest is the increasing number of windfarm proposals across our rural landscape. While renewable energy has an important role to play in tackling climate change, many residents have raised concerns about the cumulative impact of large-scale developments on our environment, tourism industry and the natural beauty of the Stewartry.
Our countryside is one of our greatest assets. Visitors travel from across the UK and beyond to experience the stunning scenery, wildlife, dark skies and peaceful landscapes that make Galloway unique. As a councillor, I believe it is important that local communities are properly consulted and that their views are fully considered when major developments are proposed.
Supporting local businesses is also a priority for me. Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, providing employment, services and opportunities throughout the area. From independent shops and hospitality businesses to tourism operators and local tradespeople, these enterprises help keep our towns and villages vibrant and sustainable.
The farming community also plays a vital role in the life of Dee and Glenkens. Farmers are not only food producers but also custodians of our countryside. They face many challenges, including rising costs, changing regulations and market pressures. I am committed to supporting our agricultural sector and ensuring that rural voices are heard at both local and national levels.
As chair of the Stewartry Area Committee, I have the privilege of working with fellow councillors, community councils, local organisations and residents to address issues affecting our area. I firmly believe that strong communities are built through partnership, engagement and open communication.
I am also passionate about improving accessibility and inclusion. As a deaf councillor and British Sign Language user, I understand the importance of ensuring that everyone can participate in public life and access services equally. I will continue to advocate for greater accessibility across council services and community activities.
Looking ahead, I remain committed to listening to residents, supporting community initiatives and working hard on the issues that matter most to local people. Whether it is protecting our environment, improving infrastructure, supporting businesses and farming, or ensuring our communities continue to thrive, my focus will always be on delivering the best possible outcomes for Dee and Glenkens.
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to contact me, attend community events or share their views. Your feedback helps shape the work I do on your behalf.
If you would like to discuss any local issue, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I look forward to continuing to work with communities across Dee and Glenkens and supporting the future of our wonderful part of Galloway.
