STRIKER Nicky Clark has spoken of his devastation following Queen of the South’s agonising penalty shootout defeat to Stenhousemuir but kept the door open on his Palmerston Park future. Clark returned to the club for a second stint a few months ago with a clear mission to fire the Doonhamers back into the Championship for the second time in his career. Despite his best efforts over two legs, the promotion dream ended in the cruellest fashion. The experienced forward was a central figure in the semi-final drama, scoring twice but ultimately seeing his crucial spot-kick saved in the shoot out. The 34-year-old said: “I’m gutted as it’s the worst way to lose a game of football and I feel for all the boys and the staff. We gave it everything but it wasn’t to be. I scored two goals but I missed the penalty in the shoot out. It happens in football but I’m still hurting. “We were throwing everything at it, I thought we played well in both legs. “I had a couple more chances in both games so it’s very frustrating.”
Clark netted a bundle of goals to spearhead the club’s play-off promotion charge. However, none of his seven goals during the campaign were scored on home turf at Palmerston Park. Reflecting on his return to Dumfries and his primary objective, Clark added: “I wanted to come back, play and score goals. The aim was to get the club into the Championship but we haven’t been able to do that.”
Despite his own heartbreak, Clark took time to praise teammate Reece Lyon, who also suffered the agony of a missed penalty amid rumours of a summer move away. He said: “Reece has been incredible this season. I’m sure he’ll go up to the next level, I have no doubts about that. He can hold his head high. “I know he’s hurting right now but he’s been brilliant for the club.” With the manager’s position vacant and the squad facing a period of transition, Clark’s own future remains unresolved. However, the forward has not ruled out extending his stay in Dumfries. He said: “I’ll relax with the family for a couple of weeks and see what happens.”
