Beechgrove set to host annual doubles tournament
A MIXED doubles tennis tournament in Moffat, first held over 90 years ago, will take place at the end of the month. The Gibson Cup at Beechgrove Tennis Club is set to return once more after being revived last year following a 24-year absence. First presented to the club by the Gibson family in 1933, the inaugural winners of the trophy were J H Edgar and W Gemmell. Last year it was kind weather for the six pairs who had entered. And Julian Mills and Tess Wilson were the winners of a keenly contested final. This year the event is scheduled for Sunday August 31. The draw will take place at 10.30 am on the day, while play is set to start at 11 am. The tournament is open to members of clubs in the Dumfries and Galloway district, such as Annan, Dalbeattie, Dumfries, Kirkcudbright and Lochmaben. Initial partner will be allocated at random; contestants must be 16 and above, and there is a £5 entry fee. The six courts can accommodate as many as 24 entrants. Play will be followed by a BBQ, tea and cakes. Club chair Katharine Wilson said: “The Gibson Cup is part of the rich history of our tennis club, and so it was great to bring back the tournament in 2024 after a 24 year absence. “Last year’s event was a great success and we’re hoping to build on that success by making the 2025 event even bigger and better! “Entries are still open and anyone who wants to take part should contact Shona Bain on 07522561952”
