A STUDENT from the area has been named Apprentice Bricklayer of the Year 2023.

Dumfries and Galloway College student Lukasz Wiczling is looking to build himself a bright future after being awarded the prestigious title by the college’s sustainable construction team.

The 22-year-old from Kirkcudbright has been at the college for four years learning his trade, as well as working at GW Davidson Building Contractor – whose boss Gary Davidson also previously won Apprentice of the Year when he attended the college.

Lukasz said: “I am extremely grateful to be named best apprentice. The past four years have been incredibly engaging and challenging.

“I really appreciate all the help and advice I received from my college lecturers, and from my employer to allow me to be in a position to perform at my best.”

Lecturer Kieran Downey said: “Lukasz is a brilliant bricklaying student, who has exceptional skills, creativity, attention to detail and a strong work ethic. He possesses technical proficiency, demonstrates problem-solving abilities, and efficiently manages his workflow.

“His dedication, craftsmanship, and commitment to excellence make him a standout in the field of bricklaying.”

Fellow lecturer Donald Hughes added: “In the four years I have known Lukasz, he has always shown a level of maturity in the way he approaches his work.

“He is an excellent example of what we try to achieve on our apprenticeship programme and we are very proud to have played a part in his journey.”

Graeme McWhir, from MKM Building Supplies, also presented Lukasz with a brick trowel set for him to use in his job.
