Anvils shock league leaders
GRETNA 2008 beat Lowland League leaders Bonnyrigg Rose 2-1 last Saturday in a fantastic display at Raydale Park.
Jay McGarva headed home Lee Currie’s cross to open the scoring for the visitors.
But the hosts soon started to apply pressure on the Bonnyrigg goal.
Iain Anderson’s snap-shot was cleared off the line before Jake Service popped up with the equaliser on 41 minutes. He nodded home at the back post from a corner kick.
And Raydale erupted on 68 minutes when Sam Atkinson curled a free kick, from just outside the box, into the bottom right corner to give Gretna the lead.
Bonnyrigg had a string of chances in the time that remained, but Gretna defended resolutely to claim all three points.
Speaking after completing the league double against the Midlothian outfit, Black and Whites boss Vinnie Parker said: “I think the two games (against Bonnyrigg) were probably a bit different.
“(Earlier in the season) Bonnyrigg had just come into the league and were still trying to find their feet a wee bit. I’m not taking anything away from the boys, they were excellent that day. “Today, I thought our hard work and effort was immense. It was just a continuation from last week.
“I thought last week’s performance was outstanding, and I think the boys have shown a bit of consistency and taken the performance from last week into today’s game.”
Parker added: “I thought we could have grabbed two or three more before the break as well.
“It’s down to hard work, I really believe that. The boys are really working for each other, and I think we’ve turned a big corner, in terms of unity. “There’s a lot of stuff coming together.
“But you can’t get carried away either. We need to stick to what we’re good at and that’s being honest and hard working.”
The Anvils are targeting a third win on the spin tomorrow afternoon as they return to Raydale Park to face Bo’ness United.
