Fuel spillage shuts roads

MORE than 200 gallons of spilled diesel have been causing traffic chaos today.

The main A711 Dumfries – Dalbeattie had to be closed for several hours when the fuel tank of an articulated lorry was punctured, pictured, in a crash with a car about three miles from Dalbeattie.
Emergency services were alerted as the diesel flooded on to the road and police had to close the main route – but no-one was seriously injured in the incident near Kirkgunzeon Village.
Firefighters from Dalbeattie attended and roads staff had to be brought in to clear the diesel and prevent pollution to nearby farmland.
Diversions were set up on both sides of the accident scene with traffic diverted at Dalbeattie and Beeswing.
The car was badly damaged in the accident, but police said there were no serious injuries.
A police spokesman said: “The fuel tank of an HGV has been ruptured in the accident and the road is impassible until the cleanup is completed.
“A clean-up operation is underway.”
