World Championships for Dumfries ice hockey ace

DUMFRIES ice hockey star Megan Mitchell and Great Britain Under 18 Women's side relinquished a two-goal lead during their opening World Championship match against China in Poland.

Great Britain’s Emily Harris scored a goal in the first and second periods but China roared back with GB having to settle with one point from their 3-2 overtime defeat.

The Brits still have to play Korea, Norway, Austria and hosts Poland.

Solway Sharks Juniors player Mitchell and her GB teammates arrived at their base in Katowice earlier this week.

Solway Sharks coach Jamie Kerr said of Megan’s inclusion: “It will be another great honour for Megan to pull on a GB shirt and represent her country. It underlines her phenomenal progress in the sport since coming to us in late 2015 and is testament to her attitude and desire.

“She has come on so much since playing her first game four years ago and her current selection is a much deserved reward having also missed the start of this season through injury.

“Megan is yet another example of some of the quality national and international junior players our small club can produce.”

Great Britain Under 18 Women’s World Championship Schedule:

Friday January 3: Great Britain U18 Women v Korea U18 Women 12 pm.

Sunday January 5: Norway U18 Women v Great Britain U18 Women – 3.30 pm

Tuesday January 7: Great Britain U18 Women v Austria U18 Women  3.30 pm

Wednesday January 8: Great Britain U18 Women v Poland U18 Women 7 pm.
