Woman dies in burn fall

AN ELDERLY woman has died after falling 20 feet down a burn near Clarencefield on Sunday evening.

After growing concerned when she didn’t return home from a walk, her son began searching the nearby area, a spokesman for Annan Coastguard explained.

Shortly after, he discovered her having plunged around 20 feet down Brow Burn, which leads to Brow Well.

Police were contacted at 7.10 pm, quickly raising the alarm with Annan Coastguard, who attended and carried the 73 year-old a quarter-mile back to the well.

Following the incident, Police Scotland said in a statement:

“Police were called around 7.10 pm on Sunday following the sudden death of a 73-year-old woman in Clarencefield.

“There does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

Posting on their Facebook page, Annan Coastguard Rescue Team called the evening “very difficult”. A statement read: “Many thanks to Annan CRT, Portling CRT, CGOC Belfast, Police Scotland, SAS for all your help and professionalism with a very difficult call out in the Dumfries area last night.”

The woman has not yet been named.
