Town invited to a virtual ROM

ANNAN’S Riding of the Marches will be mostly virtual and interactive this summer.

The organisers have once again put their thinking caps on to come up with a range of covid friendly activities to engage the community.

And photo entries are now being accepted for the virtual fancy dress, baking and pet and dog shows.

There is also a virtual best turned out contest, with categories for seniors, juniors and fancy dress.

The area’s best gardens are being sought too with entries accepted from Brydekirk, Creca, Eaglesfield, Newbie, Powfoot and Cummertrees, as well as Annan.

And later in the year they hope to hold an actual crowning ceremony for Queen of the Border Olivia Schiller-Hughes, covid guidelines permitting.

The committee, pictured above, hope that lots of residents will take part in the virtual fun and unveiling their ideas this week, ROM convener Stuart Thompson said: “We have beefed up our offering from last year and we want to involve as many people in the community as possible. “There are lots of competitions and we want as many as possible to partake and let’s maintain the community spirit that way.

“It is very disappointing that this is the second year we are having to cancel it and it’s a big miss. But we are now engaging with businesses and the community and want to kickstart this year’s plans and hopefully next year will be back to normal.”

This year’s sponsors are Alpha Solway, Annandale Distillery, Carrs Billington, Tesco, LJ Residential, Pamela Patterson and Teresa Woodman.

Thanking them, Mr Thompson said: “We are very, very grateful to our sponsors. I think Annan is extremely fortunate that we have such loyal and committed businesses that collaborate and support organisations like ours.

“This is a new way of working but the response has been great, particularly from the schools for the fancy dress. That is absolutely fantastic, so a big thanks to them for taking part.

“Other groups, organisations and individuals can still take part.”
