Town group calls on public to get involved

MOFFAT Community Council needs you — the group are calling on committed members of the public to help them make the town thrive.

Following October’s community council elections, which saw Moffat wave goodbye to some long standing members, welcome new community representatives and elect new office bearers, the group decided to overhaul several aspects of their day-to-day running.

New chairman Bob Opray said: “Our main aim is to make Moffat Community Council more inclusive and welcoming.

“A lot of people in Moffat don’t know who or what a community council is and we want to change that and get as many local people not just in the know, but on board as possible.

“We want every single person living in the Moffat area to know that they are always welcome and encouraged to attend our meetings and their opinions count.”

The group are currently focusing their efforts on establishing sub groups which will consist of both community council members and non members, a first for the town.

Sub groups covering 18 different concerns and priorities of Moffat, such as tackling empty buildings, a Station Park action group and even a team dedicated to organising the World Gold Panning Championships and more have been created.

So far many members of the public have signed on to support various sub groups.

Bob said: “We can only have 12 members on our committee but we are very ambitious and want to achieve a lot so we need the help of the wider community. “If we all work together we can get jobs done faster, achieve more and make Moffat a better community for all.”

Anyone interested in joining one of the Moffat Community Council sub groups should contact the committee’s secretary Sylvia Moffat on sylviamoffat@yahoo. co.uk or by phoning 01683 220530.

The group meet at Moffat Town Hall the fourth Tuesday of every month, with a summer break.

They next meet on Tuesday February 23.
