Top award for youth summit

DUMFRIES and Galloway Council has scooped a top award at the Scottish Event Awards.

The council’s Commonwealth Youth Summit came top in the Best Cause/Charity Event category at a glitzy ceremony held in Glasgow.
Held last June, the summit attracted over 200 participants from 19 different Commonwealth countries.
Key speakers such as Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington and Falklands war hero Simon Weston attended the three-day event.
The summit also focused on workshops to improve leadership and communication skills for delegates, and provided hands-on team-building exercises.
Councillor Tom McAughtrie, chairman of the council’s community and customer services committee, said: “This is a wonderful achievement for everyone involved in the Commonwealth Youth Summit.
“The work that community learning and development staff put into the event was above and beyond, and I am glad to see that this work has been recognised in the form of the award.
“A massive congratulations should also go to all the volunteers who helped facilitate the summit – without them there would have been no event, and no award.”
At the same awards ceremony, the council run Youth Beatz festival was also commended in the Best Educational Event category.
