Campus package posed 'no risk' say police

A PACKAGE which caused a full scale alert at the University of Glasgow campus in Dumfries on Thursday did not pose a risk - police have revealed.

At around 12.30 pm yesterday police received a report of a suspicious package at the campus and staff and students were evacuated.

Emergency services rushed to the Crichton and extensive cordons were put in place around the Rutherford McCowan building at the centre of the drama.

However, after extensive testing and checks throughout the afternoon, the response was finally downscaled.

A police spokesman said: “The package sent to the university campus in Dumfries was found to contain material that posed no risk to the public.

“We would like to thank the public for their co-operation and ask them to remain vigilant.”

It followed a similar incident at the university’s Glasgow site on Wednesday and the Halifax building in Edinburgh’s Princes Street was also evacuated yesterday after reports of a suspicious delivery.
