Stay safe

IT'S Drowning Prevention Week and people in the region are being urged to brush up on their water safety education.

Dumfries and Galloway Water Safety Partnership members gathered, pictured above, to launch the 2019 campaign, which aims to reduce the number of drowning and non-fatal drowning incidents which occur each year, by showing people how to be safe but still have fun near water.

Stewart Bryden, from HM Coastguard, said: “I would like to remind people, not to mix alcohol with activities involving water and also warn those on or near beaches to be careful when using inflatable toys in water pursuits, particularly in coastal locations, as they can very quickly be pulled out to sea. Anyone finding themselves or others in danger should call 999 immediately.”

Over 700 people lose their lives to drowning in the UK and Ireland every year and thousands more suffer injuries. To find out more, go to www.rlss.org.uk/drowning-prevention-week
