Squash club celebrates £1 deal

SQUASH players in Lockerbie are celebrating after securing the future of their site.

Last week they got the final go-ahead from councillors to purchase the squash and racketball club in Glasgow Road from the local authority for just a £1 fee.

The community asset transfer deal will include the building footprint plus some of the surrounding area.

Club treasurer Harry Earl yesterday said: “This land transfer is the best news for the club since the building was built in 1975.

“The future plans agreed by the committee for the club will ensure that the Squash and Racketball Club will continue to benefit the community of Lockerbie for years to come.”

Explaining more about their vision, he added: “The project plans will be taken forward in stages to enable the club to become a net zero carbon energy user and have lower running costs than present. These low costs will benefit the whole community by having the opportunity to engage with the club at an affordable level.

“The community will have the well-known positive physical and mental wellbeing benefits of playing a sport and the social side of being a club member.”

Meanwhile, thanks were also expressed to ward officer Steven Wylie, for his support and guidance during the transfer application process.
