QUALITY and strength were at the fore at this year’s South West Scotland Dairy Show. It took place at Wallet’s Mart last Wednesday with a fantastic turnout of cattle and exhibitors from across Dumfries and Galloway, Cumbria and Northumberland. The calf championship was dominated by Cumbrian-based exhibitors Gareth and Kane Ogden, who took both champion and reserve titles. Champion calf was Pearsgill Acetylene Oralie, born September 2024; while reserve went to Pearsgill Liquidcourage Melanie, born October 2024. AYRSHIRE CHAMP . . . shown by Hew and Jack Howie, with Lauren Burgess from Tarff Valley [/caption] Topping the Ayrshire section was Stevensons Bunty 178 VG88, shown by Hew, Wilma and Jack Howie and William Stevenson. Fresh with her third calf at the end of August, she is currently giving 42 litres per day. Standing reserve Ayrshire was West Mossgiel Cherub 239 EX94, exhibited by G G Baynes and Son, Northumberland. Now in her fifth lactation and giving 40 litres per day, Cherub is projected to yield 11,000 litres. The top Jersey title was won by heifer in milk Ingleview Victorious M Jane VG86 (1yr) from TA & ML Jackson & Daughters, Dumfries. She was purchased this summer at the Ingleview Dispersal Sale for 7500gns. Calved in June, she was reserve junior champion at the UK Dairy Expo 2025. The reserve spot went to the Buchanan family with home bred Tintoview Levine Blondie VG87 (2yr), a second-lactation cow calved in January, now back in-calf to Billy Mack and still giving 25 litres per day. In the Holsteins, Logan Latenite Shania VG89, exhibited by Brian and Michael Yates, secured the championship for the second year running. A second-calved cow, fresh in April and still giving 50 litres a day, she has been in superb form and was reserve interbreed at the 2025 Royal Highland Show and champion at Dumfries Show. Meanwhile, ten young handlers competed in the junior showmanship class and winning for the third year running was Sophie Brown, while Ruby Patterson won the senior handling section. Photos: Emily Davis
