A LOCKERBIE farmer and a vet had a surprise at the weekend with the arrival of triplet calves. Kevin Jardine, of Newbigging Farms, called in Ark vet John Alexander to assist when his seven-year-old, home-bred shorthorn cross cow went into labour. He said: “One after one he delivered three calves, to mine and his amazement. We do get twins from time to time but it’s never been known here to have triplets from a cow. Statistically it’s a one in 100,000 chance of it happening.” Kevin confirmed they were delivered naturally and described the newborns as ‘lively and healthy’. He added: “We are currently supplementing the calves with some milk powder but will look to foster one onto another cow when needed.”
