Scotch pie makers go head to head
PERFECT PIES . . . Kerr Little from The Little Bakery of Dumfries, which took home the crown in 2019

TWO local bakeries are in the running to have their scotch pies crowned as world-beating.

The World Scotch Pie ‘Champion of Champions’, launched earlier this week, is pitting all previous winners against each other in search of the perfect pastry.

Thornhill butchers John G Renicks, which took home the title in 2012, has made this year’s shortlist.

Iain Renicks from the Drumlanrig Street shop said: “The World Scotch Pie Championship is one of the key events in our calendar each year and we were not sure if it would go ahead but when Scottish Bakers announced this one-off format for 2021 we jumped at the chance to pit our pie against the best of the best. We are confident we will win of course!”

Also representing the region is The Little Bakery of Dumfries.

After winning just two years ago, staff at the family-run Heathhall store are hopeful that their much-loved pie will come out on top again.

The champion of champions will be decided by two industry experts who will carry out a blindfolded taste-off of all 14 pies in the running.

Judging will take place on May 4 with the victors being announced on May 12.
