Rick in the region

AN 80s pop star’s bizarre antics during a visit to Dumfries have gone viral.

Hitmaker Rick Astley travelled to the region last week to recreate a wacky video made by Dumfries’ most famous DJ Calvin Harris back in 2008. The original clip shows a young Calvin telling viewers how to create his trademark ‘fly eye’ glasses, with steps including throwing a raw chicken into the sea and putting a shoe in the oven.

And last week Rick Astley — most famous for his hit song Never Gonna Give You Up — headed to Dumfries to recreate the decade-old video with painstaking attention to detail.

The new video was uploaded to Astley’s Youtube channel alongside the caption: “I always loved Calvin Harris’s Calvin in Dumfries video so I decided to make my own.” The 53-year-old visits several iconic locations from the original video, including town centre stores, Sandyhills Beach and Lincluden Abbey.

Since it was uploaded Astley’s recreation has attracted more than 32,000 views, while Calvin’s 2008 original has attracted just over 45,000.
