Principals revealed for Lockerbie RoM

LOCKERBIE Gala and Riding of the Marches have revealed their principal line up for 2023.

Leading the cavalcade this summer will be Ewan Lowther from Waterbeck, above.

The 19-year-old apprentice joiner is delighted to be taking on the role of cornet and said: “It feels amazing to have this opportunity as it’s something I never thought I would do.”

It’s his first time riding in the event but he follows in the footsteps of his uncle, Scott Lowther, who was standard bearer in 2012 – and he hopes to be riding Scott’s horse, Red Mystique on the day.

Ewan, who attended Lockerbie Academy, has another family connection to the gala as well as his great uncle, James Irving, was cornet in 1969.

Eilidh Kennedy

Riding alongside him will be cornet’s lass Eilidh Kennedy, from near Lochmaben.

The 24-year-old agricultural consultant has previously participated in rideouts and also has strong family links: her dad, David Kennedy, was both cornet in 1986 and standard bearer 2016, while her uncle, Callum Kennedy was cornet in 1988 and the 2018 standard bearer.

Eilidh, who will ride her own horse Meg, said: “I am looking forward to following in my dad and uncle’s footsteps and representing the town in its local traditions, whilst meeting new people along the way.”

HOORAY . . . Penny McLatchie rides with daughter Freya

Flying the flag as standard bearer this year will be Penny McLatchie, a former cornet’s lass from 1996.

She said: “I’m absolutely delighted at being asked to carry the standard this year.

“I hope my eight-year-old daughter Freya will join me riding Woody and I’ll be riding Willow. I will be happy not to be running it all this year!

“I am super excited for the year ahead and delighted to join Ewan and Eilidh in our special roles.”

Meanwhile, a Lockerbie Gala spokesperson added: “We are very excited to have three keen and experienced riders leading our annual traditions this year. Forward Lockerbie!”
