Pool photograph appeal

OLD photos are being sought of the swimming pool at Powfoot.

Powlakes Charity Group are working on a project to produce an information panel about the history and development of the village.

It will be sited on the wall by the bowling green and complement the one at the hotel about the Solway Panorama.

The group has already amassed a wealth of info about the local history and a vast number of digitised photos and postcards were given to them by the late David Pringle.

However, they can’t find any early pictures of the swimming pool on the beach outside the hotel and are appealing to locals to have a look in their own collection.

Co-ordinator Mike Rodger said: “Early research indicated that the pool was built in 1903 and was paid for by businessmen from Dumfries, led by William Tilburn, who raised £500 following an incident where a number of schoolgirls got into trouble whilst swimming in the Solway.

“The pool was seen as an integral part of Powfoot’s developing health and leisure provision.”

Anyone who can supply photos is asked to contact Mike by email at [email protected] or via the Cummertrees and Powfoot page on Facebook.
