Nursery owners’ closure sadness

A NURSERY in Ecclefechan is to close next month after 30 years of looking after youngsters.

The owners and directors of ABC, Ann and Malcolm McEwan, say it has been a ‘heartbreaking decision’ to make.

Explaining their reasons, the couple said: “The imminent closure on the 21st May has been forced upon us, due to being unable to recruit a new manager and the compounding pressures on what has already been an incredibly stressful and difficult time.

“We cannot compete with the salaries and financial packages offered by the local authority for the same or similar position. We now find the situation untenable.”

Looking back on many happy times, they added: “Over the years the nursery has touched the lives of thousands of children and their families, it has provided work and experience for managers, practitioners, cooks and cleaners, it has given joy and love and it has shared sorrow. There have been many ups and downs along the way, memories to treasure. May 21st will be an incredibly sad day.

“We say thank you to you all, past and present.”
