New coat of arms on the cards for Burgh

LOCHMABEN could be getting a new coat of arms but it will come at a cost.

Community councillor May McKerrell this week explained that the town had lost its coat of arms (crest) in 1975.

She added: “The Lochmaben Council was abolished and when this happened Lochmaben lost the coat of arms because it belonged to a group that no longer existed.

“To get the new coat of arms that we could use as a community council it would have to be adjusted very slightly.

“I feel the history of Lochmaben is so important. We’ve got a unique history and we are the only burgh in Dumfries and Galloway that hasn’t yet reticulated its coat of arms. We’re the only Royal Burgh to not reticulate its coat of arms.

“The coat of arms could be used for any organisation in the town, it has so many benefits.

“The old coat of arms should never be used as it’s not allowed.”

The cost to make the coat of arms change is £2500 and the community council agreed to go ahead with the project but only if they can find funding.
