Moffat considers how to mark Tweed Trail
VIEWS have been shared this week on how Moffat’s presence should be marked on the River Tweed Trail.
A meeting took place on Monday night in the town hall to gather ideas for whether there should be a statue or signpost in the town for visitors to have their photo taken beside as they start their hike/run/cycle to Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Karen Braithwaite helped to organise the session and is still keen to hear from as many people as possible.
She said: “This is a huge opportunity for leisure facilities for residents, employment, new businesses and established businesses. Find out more, and please get involved so the right decisions are made for our community.
“The Trail is projected to bring thousands more visitors to Moffat from 2028, to hike and cycle the route to Berwick-upon-Tweed. Perhaps the project will fund better public toilets for everyone? Better walks and benches for us all? More parking and electric car chargers? Increase demand for cash and post office services so a new provider will step in, because it will be commercially viable?”
And she outlined some of the potential benefits for the town, adding: “Visitors will need accommodation, food and drink, transport from their accommodation to the start-stop points of each leg, perhaps luggage transport between accommodation points, bike repairs, a better waterproof jacket, healthcare, and souvenirs.
“And the people/businesses supplying these will need staff, electricians, plumbers, architects, painters and decorators, graphic designers, etc.”
