Medical research sessions were a hit

PUPILS from two schools in the region have successfully completed the 2026 Medical Research Scotland Academy.

A total of 45 senior pupils from Wallace Hall and Kirkcudbright Academy took part in the programme exploring medical science and STEM careers.

Aimed at transmitting the knowledge and expertise of medical research professionals into classrooms, the event was free and livestreamed event.

They heard from professors, researchers and PhD students on a range of topics, such as the impact of headers in football on the brain, to delving into the impact of nutrition.

Following the interactive lessons, the young people asked questions about their higher and further education choices.

Chair of Medical Research Scotland, Professor Matthew Walters MBE said: “I’m incredibly proud of the role the Medical Research Scotland Academy plays in streaming researchers directly into classrooms in Dumfries and Galloway.”

“We’re giving young people the chance to get a glimpse into the exciting world of medical science and ask questions. With over 1500 live views across this year’s Academy sessions, we are delighted to see the high level of interest in career paths in this field.”
