Magic in Madrid

A TRIP overseas is always a great experience, add to that your team is playing in a European Final and it makes it even better.

Well that is exactly what myself and my dad got to enjoy as Liverpool Football Club triumphed in the 2019 Champions League Final in Madrid against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

After suffering heartbreak at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev 13 months earlier when Liverpool were denied European glory by Real Madrid, I promised my dad that they would go one step further next year in time for his 50th birthday.

So we had to be there.

Our Spanish adventure began by flying to Alicante last Friday, we then embarked on our long four hour drive to the Spanish capital in the early hours of Saturday morning to embrace the whole day, determined that a sixth European cup would be coming home.

Arriving into Madrid, all you could see was a sea of red with Liverpool fans having completely taken over the city.

Although the weather was scorching hot (it peaked at 37 degrees), it did not stop myself and all Liverpool fans as one singing in the Plaza Mayor square as excitement built towards the final itself.

At about 5pm local time, we travelled on the metro towards the Estadio Metropolitano to soak up the atmosphere at a venue which in a couple of hours would be remembered forever.

After seeing the team bus enter the stadium and then trying my own ways of getting into the ground, I had to accept watching it in a bar a stone’s throw from the stadium.

What followed in the game was pure euphoria as Liverpool won by two goals to nil to provide one of the greatest presents my dad has ever received and my promise to him came true.

As the final whistle blew, the tears of sadness from Kiev were now tears of joy in Madrid as me and my dad just hugged each other so tightly as we both shared an experience that will live long in the memory.
