Living happily ever after 65 years on

A COUPLE who first met at a dance were full of joy on Tuesday as they reached a marriage milestone.

John, 87, and Sadie, 86, McGregor celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary after tying the knot on February 25 1955 at St Andrew’s Church in Annan, followed by a honeymoon to Blackpool, a place that is still close to their hearts.

It was a white wedding and honeymoon for the couple, with it snowing heavily in both locations.

The pair met as teenagers and danced together at the Victoria Halls in the town, but they had to wait five years to get married after Sadie’s dad made a strict rule in which she had to wait until her 21st birthday.

After tying the knot, they went on to have three children, daughters Anne and Linda, and son Ian.

They also have 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

John and Sadie have always lived locally, spending time in Brydekirk and Newbie, but have been settled in Annan for the last 37 years.

Over the years John has been very involved in the community and used to organise the different floats and decorations for the annual Riding of the Marches during his time working at Seafoods.

And Sadie played the drums in the Annan Pipe Band.

Sharing their secret for a long marriage, Sadie said: “We just go with the flow and take things as it comes.

“We would not change it for anything, we have had a grand life.”

Meanwhile, there’s been a double celebration this month as Sadie had her birthday just eight days before the anniversary.

Their close family gathered at the Queensberry last weekend to mark the couple’s blue sapphire achievement.

John and Sadie were also thrilled to receive a congratulatory card from HM The Queen.

And being married for a long period of time seems to run in the family as Anne and son Ian are following suit with own respective partners.

Anne said: “Me and my husband have been married for 44 years.

“Marriage does grow on you.”

Ian added: “It’s fantastic to see them married for 65 years, not many people get to this landmark.”
