Jackie plans zip slide fundraiser take two

A CANCER patient undergoing chemotherapy has set her sights on raising even more money for a support charity.

Jackie Armstrong, 46, from Lockerbie is currently battling breast cancer for the second time and is committed to raising as much money as possible for Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres.

On September 13 the mum-of three will zip slide across the River Ninth, Dumfries, and is appealing for 150 people to sign up and join her on the day.

This is the second time she has organized a zip slide to be erected over the Nith: in 2013 she raised £20,000 for Maggie’s by encouraging 140 friends and locals to fly across the river.

This year she hopes to match the sum but says anything would be a bonus. Jackie said: “It was a very enjoyable day for everyone with loads of people in fancy dress, I hope it can be just as successful this year.”

She was first diagnosed with cancer in April 2010 but later given all the clear and started fundraising for Maggie’s in 2012 and in that time has raised over £30,000.

Jackie said: “The cancer is back and I am going through chemo, so far I am halfway through treatment and all is going well. “It is just more important than ever that I raise money.”

She added: “It is very important to raise funding for Maggie’s as they have helped me throughout my treatment both practically and emotionally.

“Many patients from Dumfries and Galloway will use the centre as people from this area have radiotherapy in Edinburgh, so I want to help others in the same situation.”
